Today i ll show you how easy it is to do a nice and soft background for your paintings. My ideas work beautifully with flower paintings and many other still life objects.
Materials:
Cadmium Red medium
Pthalo blue
Pthalo Green
Cadmium yellow light
Titanium White
Turpentine
Lin seed Oil
A Set of Brushes
Kitchen Tissue papers
An old soft cotton fabric Rag
Canvas paper/board
Prep your canvas with two coats of Gesso. Rub with sand paper after final coat to achieve a smooth surface for painting.
Dip your flat brush in linseed oil and smooth over the whole canvas.Use linseed oil sparingly or the surface will become too sloppy to paint on. Remove excess oil with paper towel. Now your canvas is ready to paint on.
STEP 1:
Mix Red and Green and white to create soft grey tone
OR
Pthalo green,pthalo blue+yellow+white
OR
Pthalo blue+red+yellow+titanium white to create Grey.
Make several shades of grey by adding white to the first grey mixture, and keep adding white to make subsequent gradient greys.
Apply the grey mixture onto the canvas with a flat brush, lightening the mixture as you go towards the Light side.Take the soft cotton fabric/kitchen paper towel to rub the paint smooth on the canvas.
STEP 2: USE ORIGINAL COLORS WITH PALETTE KNIFE
While the paint is still wet, take the original color (if u used red+green)to make grey, either take red or green, lighten the red with white and now apply it with a pallet knife. Let some of the under painting show through. Spread the red paint vertically with the pallette knife.Throw some green here and there to give the back ground a soft harmonious look.
STEP 3: LIGHT IN YOUR PAINTING
Every painting has its own light;so should yours!
Keep in mind the shadow and light side in your background painting. You should decide from the very beginning how light falls on the background. And, then follow the light till the end.The famous Artist David Jensen follows the same procedure to create soft back grounds. You can see his work here:

Colors for the flowers can range from deep red to lightest pink and white. The background grey created by red and green will beautifully tie the colors and painting and the end result will be an awesome painting.
