How to draw a face in 3 Simple Steps

Here is my method of how to draw a  head in three Easy and Simple steps;

Basic proportions of drawing a Head:

Draw three equidistant lines on paper.Mark first as the eye brow line,second as the bottom of the nose line and third line should dictate bottom of the chin.Draw another line of the same distance above brow line,This should be the hairline.And another line of the same distance above hair line which dictates the shape of the head.

The standard proportions to draw a head are discussed here. You have to know what is Basic or Normal to further your knowledge of drawing heads or faces.When you know the basics you can make changes from person to person.

Basic shapes:

Begin your sketch by blocking in basic forms for eyes,nose and lips.By forms i mean put circles inside the rectangular shape you put for eyes.Our eyes are placed on orbicular circle inside of our eue sockets. So,draw the form first and then go for detail of the individual/photo you are sketching.This will give your eye the three dimension look on the face .Of course you dont want a flat looking eye created with thin and thick lines in your face sketch.
Do the same for nose,lips,cheekbones and chin.Identify the underlying form and work from there.

I make use of forms while drawing.This gives the best 3 dimensional results to sketches.

This is how i draw a realistic eye using the side of the pencil and thinking about value scale.Always think shapes and form when drawing.I have written a full blog with video on how to draw an eye here

Line and Value:

Hold the pencil like an artist; between your thumb and index finger.Use the pencil from one side,not with the lead down as you do when writing.This way you will get values instead of harsh lines.
A good sketch is made up of values of one ,two or more colors.I use five value scale for my sketches and paintings which have a perfect looking three dimensional look to it.

I use 5 values of charcoal and graphite pencil to create sketches.

Light and Shadow;

A very important factor in your sketch is the side of light and shadow.It is also the main element of bringing your sketch to life just as the Value scale.

My drawing shows use of five basic elements in rendering a 3D drawing.From basic proportions to line,value scale,light and shadow theories are applied to make this beautiful sketch.
